First Aid practice

Team members have been refreshing their skills in different aspects of First Aid and a variety of Cave Rescue techniques both above and below ground.

Our practice locations can range from indoor climbing facilities (such as the excellent training areas at Arco in Eccleshall which we are able to use each year), to "classroom" based theory sessions and full underground practices with members of other organisations.

Recent Training Events

Underground Exercise, May 17th

Shoring in the event of a collapse in a cave or mine isn't just about being at the face digging, although that's a key part of it ... its also learning how to manoeuvre awkward equipment safely underground, how and where to stack the debris, ensuring good comms to the surface, controlling the scene and looking after your team mates.

The team spent an excellent day underground in a north Shropshire copper mine practicing the art of progressing through a fall in the event of a need to enact a rescue. There were a number of new faces and plenty of the regulars who got involved with something a little more outside their comfort zones.

Thanks to all those who participated and Neal Rushton for leading the workshop.

Land Search Training, April 26th

On a nice sunny Sunday several Land Search trained team members joined colleagues in the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) for a series of training exercises and based on and around the beautiful Bromesberrow Estate near Ledbury. The various exercises included a dense woodland search for a seriously injured person followed by First aid and recovery of them. Another 'stand' saw team members searching for and learning how to recover a 'body'.

Equipment Inspection Training, March 29th

Inspecting cave rescue equipment requires experience, attention to detail and training.
Well done and thank you to our team members who have volunteered to undergo training and complete our regular kit inspections. This year we opened the kit inspection course up to colleagues in other rescue teams.

Winter Training Day, 11th January, 2026

Our first training session of 2026 took place, once again, in the excellent facilities at Arco Professional Safety Services training centre in Eccleshall.

Arco Professional Safety Services, Eccleshall.

In morning session we took time to recognise the long service of our amazing volunteers. We may be a small cave rescue team but we have a dedicated membership with 6 receiving certificates for 25 years of service and 1 receiving a certificate for 40 years. Thank you to all our team members.

The presentation was followed by some sessions on 'being ready for a shout', comms systems that we have access to as a team (including our unique µHeyphones), and how they operate.
